Revolut is a global neobank and financial technology company that offers banking services. Headquartered in London, it was founded in 2015 by Nikolay Storonsky and Vlad Yatsenko
In light of the critical role that Product Owners played at the company in shaping and enhancing the product, the need for a comprehensive understanding of UX Design was paramount. While Product Owners collaborated closely with UX and Product Designers, a significant challenge arose from the lack of formal training in UX Design for a substantial portion of Product Owners.
This knowledge gap posed obstacles to their effectiveness in providing informed guidance, constructive critiques, and leading design sessions, thereby impacting the overall product development process.
Addressing this disparity was crucial for ensuring a more seamless integration of UX principles into the decision-making and design evaluation aspects of product ownership at the company. Closing this knowledge gap through a targeted UX Design Skills certification program was aimed at empowering Product Owners with a solid foundation in UX Design and contributed to a more cohesive and innovative collaboration among cross-functional teams, ultimately enhancing the quality and user experience of the company's products.
The project was a complex initiative that engaged various stakeholder groups. We commenced with identifying a set of targeted skills and behaviors essential for UX Designers. Given the novelty of this approach within the company, we opted for a pilot phase involving two distinct groups of volunteers.
The initiative kicked off with a skill assessment for volunteers, establishing a baseline for gauging the program's effectiveness upon its conclusion.
We've had 2 groups of volunteers (A/B testing). The first group embarked on a fully self-paced program sourced from a reputable online course provider, while the second group undertook a hybrid program facilitated by a vendor, blending e-learning modules with virtual instructor-led sessions.
To ensure the success of the initiative, we conducted a thorough vendor selection and assessment process, evaluating criteria such as content quality and the availability of practical exercises.
Collaborating with experts from the Product Design team, we also developed workshops designed to complement the online programs with the company's know-how.
In this project, I played a crucial role in bridging senior leaders in Product and Design, making sure their input and vision shaped our direction. They weren't just my clients; they were true partners.
I've also worked closely with the procurement team to secure budget approvals for our external vendors.
Alongside senior designers, we developed and organized practical in-house workshops.
Supported by a program manager on my team, I took charge of vendor selection, communication, and reporting, overseeing the nitty-gritty of program activities. It wasn't just about managing relationships; it was about making the program 'ours' and ensuring it hit the mark.
Overall, I've had full ownership of the program rollout and management.
The ultimate outcome was the successful implementation of the UX Design Skills Certification Program—a thoughtfully developed initiative with a tailored curriculum designed to fulfill the specific needs of the Product team. This comprehensive program consisted of various crucial elements:
The program targeted skills critical for UX Designers, such as user research, prototyping and wireframing, usability testing, etc.
The program's effectiveness was measured using a comprehensive
set of metrics, ensuring a thorough evaluation of its impact:
These metrics provide a holistic view of the program's success, from the enhancement of core competencies to participant satisfaction and the tangible applicability of acquired skills in real-world professional scenarios.
